In today’s climate of budget and staff cuts, it’s very important that both the general public and our current (or potential) employers know the importance of librarians. A part of every librarian’s job can be to advocate for their own position or for librarians and libraries in general.
The ALA website has lots of resources for those interested in library advocacy. They have information on everything from media outreach to state and federal legislation concerning libraries. Other issues such as Internet safety, diversity, and literacy are also discussed. The ALA says:
No matter if you are a library professional in a public, school, or academic setting; or if you are a library Friend, trustee, patron, or citizen the library has an impact on your life and you have a role in your library’s future. You can be a Library Advocate.
